Our Solar Technology

The Importance of Solar in Solar Lamps

Lamp with Grupo Fenix Nicargua-made panel

Solar or photovoltaic technology is one of the world’s most rapidly changing and exciting industries of our day.  There are multiple competing types of technologies, producers all over the world and advancements in efficiency every year.  We take great care to focus on solar power and the batteries used in conjunction with the solar panels as these two components account for the greatest percentage of the system’s cost.  Moreover, batteries may have the highest propensity for failure in the field due to their nature.

Our philosophy for dealing with these chaotic conditions to deliver solar technology to those in need at lowest price at suitable quality is as follows:

  • Bright New Ideas focuses on small-scale, independent systems typically designed for a single family or small unit.  We focus on items which make economic sense for either a one-room hut or a small building such as a church or school.
  • Bright New Ideas focuses on keeping up-to-date with the latest in the solar industry in order to balance market forces with need.  If there is a shift in solar cell technology, a change in market prices
  • We scrutinize solar technology used based upon suitability for the environment in which we are working.  For example, although glass panels may have certain advantages under some conditions, we may encourage using a solar panel which uses a fiberglass backboard and clear lamination for areas where there may be a high chance of the solar panel being moved and the glass breaking.

Home-Grown Panels

Our partner organization Grupo Fenix has an innovative program in which solar panels are assembled in Nicaragua.  Following our philosophy of, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” we work to expand upon local economies whenever it’s possible.
