DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (Agence France-Presse) — At least 12 children died and 20 others were severely burned when a fire razed a dormitory at a secondary school in central Tanzania, the police said Sunday.

“The fire is believed to have started after a net caught fire from a candle and spread throughout the dormitory,” Evarist Mangala, the Iringa regional police commissioner, told Agence France-Presse.

He said the police were investigating the fire that struck Idodi Secondary School, about 285 miles southwest of Dar es Salaam, on Saturday evening.

The school has no electricity, Mr. Magala said, and students normally study by candlelight after dark.

The bodies were charred beyond recognition, so the dead will be buried Tuesday in a common grave in the Iringa district, said Mwantumu Mahiza, the deputy education minister.
