Macalester College is one of the nation’s preeminent liberal arts colleges with an educational program known for its high standards for scholarship and its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. Former notable Alumni of Macalester include United States Vice President Walter Mondale and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Our partnered specialist, Amy Damon, is an associate professor in economics with a PhD from the University of Minnesota, and specializes in Central America. The Macalester College Economics Department has historically had a focus on the study of issues, challenges and methods of economic development in the third world. Our partnership with Macalester college allows us to continuously improve our empirical approach to solar-LED deployment and tracking, as well as build new insights into their affect on impoverished populations.
The Solar Oven Society is a long-time and well-known fixture in the Minnesota Twin Cities Community. The Solar Oven Society is organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation established in 1991. The Solar Oven Society has extended partnerships in many areas of need all around the globe, particularly in Africa. They are dedicated to helping alleviate hunger in developing countries by helping people help themselves. We are honored to be partners with the Solar Oven Society to bring solar lighting to Africa.
Grupo Fenix is perhaps the most widely internationally-recognized rural solar implementation organization in Central America. Since 1989 Grupo Fenix has manufactured and installed literally thousands of different renewable energy systems under a social entrepreneurship model in Nicaragua and Honduras. Grupo Fenix was founded in the waning days of Nicaragua’s civil war and since its inception its vision has been to use the sun’s energy to improve living conditions and show a path toward sustainable economic development and independence. We share Grupo Fenix’s philosophy and are a proud partner.
